The Bountiful Beauty of Bordeaux

Much of the attractive architecture in Bordeaux, such as the Grand Théâtre and the Esplanade des Quinconces, dates from the 18th century. Visit the Musée des Douanes at the Place de la Bourse to find out about the history of Bordeaux, and particularly its importance as a major river port over the centuries. If you’re interested in Second World War history, the Centre Jean Moulin tells the history of the French Resistance in the area, and is named after their leader. The stylish Cours de l’Intendance is a shopper’s delight with stores by many of the top fashion brands.

More to Bordeaux than just Wine

Famous throughout the world for its wines, the Bordeaux region is a wine lover’s paradise. It would seem strange to stay in Bordeaux without visiting at least one of the local vineyards. If you’re travelling with another adult, take it in turns to drive on different days. That way you each get the opportunity to sample more of the wine. Experts will advise you to spit out what you’ve tasted, but of course it’s very tempting just to drink it. Remember that all drivers wanting to drive a hire car must have their driving license with them, so even if you don’t plan to be the main driver, pack your license just in case.

Must see places to visit outside Bordeaux include the beautiful historic town of St Emilion. Of course it is best known for its wine, and it would be a shame not to buy some while you’re there, but it is well worth a visit whether you’re a wine buff or not as it is a charming town with many buildings dating from the 12th century, when the citadel was built by King John of England.

The Lac de Lacanau is the place to go for watersports enthusiasts. Canoeing, sailing and windsurfing are just a few of the activities on offer. It is just twenty minutes by car from Bordeaux, and it caters for all ages so is popular with families. For surfing and kite surfing head to the nearby beaches.

Whether you’re passionate about wine, history or watersports, the Bordeaux region is the perfect place to visit.
