Linger in the Languedoc

There are several tourist attractions in the town of Beziers including the Basilique St-Nazaire, constructed in the 14th century. The cathedral is known for its frescoes and stained glass. Climb up the tower and you will be rewarded with a fine view of the town.

Head north of the town and a fifty minute drive will get you to the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut-Languedoc, the perfect place for a day's walking, cycling or horse riding. While you are there you might be lucky enough to spot a wild boar or an eagle as it is a haven for wildlife.

Take a break from driving with a boat trip on the Canal du Midi, which connects Toulouse with the Etang de Thau. The canal's chief engineer was Pierre-Paul Riquet, who was born in Beziers. It is one of the oldest European canals still in use today and a UNESCO world heritage site.

A Medieval Idyll

Don’t miss the chance to visit the medieval citadel of Carcassonne, a UNESCO protected site. Originally colonised by the Romans, the town later became involved in the conflict against the Cathars in the 13th century. It gradually fell into disrepair but was restored during the 19th century and is now the perfect medieval town with an almost fairytale appearance. As such it has proved a popular film location, used most famously for the movie Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. If you want to see it really come to life, visit during the summer when the medieval festival is held.

This is just a small taste of what the Languedoc region has to offer. If you have the chance, take your time and explore Beziers and its surrounds at your leisure.
