Visit Bergerac in the heart of the Dordogne

Best known for its wine, the small town of Bergerac in the south-west of France is also famous for its historical landmarks. Many visitors come to the area to see the prehistoric sites, particularly the caves at Lascaux. The original caves were closed to the public back in 1963, but instead visitors can now see a precise replica at Lascaux II. If you prefer to see originals, visit the Grotte de Font de Gaume where you can see some of the best preserved cave paintings in France. The Musee National de Prehistoire at Les Eyzies is also a must for history fans, and is just an hour's drive from Bergerac.

Tobacco is still produced in the area, and if you are interested in the history of its production, you can learn all about it at Bergerac's Musee du Tabac. The museum also houses a collection of snuff boxes and pipes, and features some American Indian peace pipes.

Top Things to do in and around Bergerac

Wine tasting makes a very enjoyable day out, particularly if you can persuade someone else to drive! There are numerous vineyards in the area, producing some very fine red and white wines. Don’t miss the opportunity to sample the town's best known appellations, Monbazillac and Saussignac, both sweet white wines.

Other attractions in and around Bergerac include the picturesque historic town of Sarlat-la-Caneda, with buildings dating from medieval and renaissance periods. The Rue de la Republique is reserved for pedestrians and runs across the breadth of the town. Visit on a summer's evening and you'll find street entertainers playing to crowds of tourists.

If you have time to drive to Rocamadour it is well worth a visit. Centuries ago a series of miracles made this a place of pilgrimage for many years, and it is still visited today by both pilgrims and tourists. It enjoys a superb location overlooking the Alzou valley.

Hiring a car will give you the chance to see some truly memorable parts of the Dordogne.
