Where To Go In Aix

The history of Aix can be traced back and beyond 123BC, when a Roman military camp was established by the thermal springs that are still flowing today.

Visitors should take a stroll down the Cours Mirabeau, a wide thoroughfare running between rows of fine houses, lined with plane-trees, and dotted with fountains.bordered by fine houses and decorated by fountains.

To the north of the Cours lies the old medieval town, with mansions dating from the 16th century, and to the south and west is the new town.

High-brow breakfasts can be enjoyed at the Deux Garçons, a famous brasserie, frequented by Paul Cézanne, Ernest Hemingway and Émile Zola.

For a one-stop insight into the area's rich history, visit the Cathedral of the Holy Saviour. The cathedral contains a mixture of styles spanning 1200 years, from the 5th to the 17th century, including 16th century tapestries, elaborately carved walnut doors, a 15th-century triptych, and a Renaissance dome which is still supported by the original Roman columns.

Although only covering a small geographical area of France, Aix reveals much about the country’s history and culture, and provides enough places of interest to warrant a short-break or longer holiday stay.
